Contribución al estudio biológico de la tintorera (prionace glauca) capturada accidentalmente en la pesquería de palangre de superficie de pez espada en el mediterráneo occidental OceanDocs
de la Serna, J.M.; Valeiras, J..
(Contribution to the biological study of blue shark (Prionace glauca) incidental catch by the Spanish surface longline fisheries for swordfish in the western Mediterranean). Blue shark (Prionace glauca) bycatches in the Spanish surface longline fisheries in the Mediterranean targeting swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from 1999 to 2001 represented 2% of the total catch. Information from onboard observers during 861 fishing sets in 26 longliners indicated that the highest catches were made in area 4-35000 (Alboran Sea) which represents 75.6% of the total observed catch of blue shark. The observed CPUE are from 5.5 to 34.1 kg/1000 hooks. Mean size at capture (LJFL) was 141.6 cm (SD=35.88). The proportion of females from the total was 0.5.

Large-scale genetic panmixia in the blue shark ( Prionace glauca ): a single worldwide population, or a genetic lag-time effect of the “grey zone” of differentiation? ArchiMer
Bailleul, Diane; Mackenzie, Alicia; Sacchi, Olivier; Poisson, Francois; Bierne, Nicolas; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
The blue shark Prionace glauca, among the most common and widely studied pelagic sharks, is a top predator, exhibiting the widest distribution range. However, little is known about its population structure and spatial dynamics. With an estimated removal of 10 to 20 million individuals per year by fisheries, the species is classified as “Near Threatened” by International Union for Conservation of Nature. We lack the knowledge to forecast the long-term consequences of such a huge removal on this top predator itself and on its trophic network. The genetic analysis of more than 200 samples collected at broad scale (from Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans) using mtDNA and nine microsatellite markers allowed to detect signatures of genetic...

Mercury in blue shark ( Prionace glauca ) and shortfin mako ( Isurus oxyrinchus ) from north-eastern Atlantic: Implication for fishery management ArchiMer
Biton-porsmoguer, Sebastian; Banaru, Daniela; Boudouresque, Charles F.; Dekeyser, Ivan; Bouchoucha, Marc; Marco-miralles, Francoise; Lebreton, Benoit; Guillou, Gael; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Pelagic sharks (blue shark Prionace glauca and shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus) caught by long-line Spanish and Portuguese fleets in the NE Atlantic, were sampled at Vigo fish market (Spain) for total mercury (Hg) analysis. Hg concentration in white muscle increased with size and weight in both species, but at a higher rate in shortfin mako than in the blue shark. No difference was found with sex, year and season. Spatial variation was observed in the blue shark with higher Hg values in the North of the Azorean archipelago, but not in the shortfin mako. These high-level predators are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulate contaminants (Hg) in their tissues (muscle). However, a significant positive relationship between Hg concentration and trophic level...

Updated standardized CPUE of blue shark bycaught by the French Reunion-based pelagic longline fishery (2007-2020) ArchiMer
Sabarros, Philippe; Coelho, Rui; Romanov, Evgeny V; Guillon, Nicolas; Bach, Pascal.
The blue shark Prionace glauca is the main bycatch species of the French swordfish-targeting longline fishery operating in the south-west Indian Ocean. Using observer and self-reported data collected aboard commercial longliners between 2007 and 2020, we propose a standardized CPUE series for blue shark for this fishery estimated with a lognormal generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to be used for the upcoming stock assessment. We propose to use the standardized CPUE for the period comprised between 2011 and 2020 where the monitoring effort has been consequent in comparison with previous years. Throughout 2011-2020, the standardized CPUE for the blue shark shows a significant decreasing trend.
